Some weeks ago, the Red Shoe Movement Step Up Plus program came to an end. I was going to share my certificate with a couple of comments thanking those who invited me to take part in it, but I realized that sharing some of the things I have learned so far would be even more valuable.

Here are three features of this program that I found useful, practical, and easy to apply in real life, along with two conversations that have encouraged me to change my mindset towards challenging situations:

To start with, both podcasts and chats included:

Real-life examples and advice: These addressed how to deal with circumstances related to stereotypes, implicit ideas, leadership, and many other topics. Practical examples are crucial for identifying situations where you can apply the advice given.

Effective organization of ideas: It’s key that audio and audiovisual resources are well-explained, with no assumptions made regarding the listener’s prior knowledge.

Diverse perspectives: The program included people from different countries, industries, genders, and ages. Although aimed at helping develop women’s careers, the diversity of contexts and the inclusion of men in conversations provided a broad range of tools applicable to various job positions.

To finish, there were two conversations that I found particularly useful:

Unwritten corporate rules: As we work on refining our company culture, I realized that many of these rules may no longer have a real purpose or might not even be true.

Implicit power: Understanding that we all benefit from aspects beyond our control helped me identify situations where I have more power and those where others might have more power than I do. This awareness helps in three ways:

– Thinking of ways to modify these dynamics, if possible.
– Being mindful of underrepresented groups that might struggle to be heard.
– Identifying and addressing my own unconscious biases.

Executive presence, code-switching, and communication skills were also very helpful, but discussing them in detail would require a longer text.

Ahora sí, thank you Mariela Dabbah (she/her/ella) for the program, thank you Gisele Silva and Damian Meier for considering me, and Bridgestone Latin America South for the opportunity.
