Many people believe they need a title to lead. The truth is, you can (and should) lead from whatever your role is today. Because, usually, organizations look for evidence that you can lead before they formally place people under your responsibility.

Leading before you have authority gives others a preview of what they could expect from you in a larger role.

What Leadership Looks Like Without Authority

Imagine being in one of those meetings where everyone knows that a project that is falling behind and yet nobody does anything about it.  Instead of walking away as the others are about to do, you identify the main obstacle, and say, “We have three unresolved issues. Could we assign an owner and deadline to each one before we leave?” You just showed leadership in action.

Perhaps a new employee is struggling to understand with some unwritten rules. You take the time to explain it, introduce the person to the right people, and check with them a week later. That’s also a clear way to show your leadership.

Informal leaders bring clarity when there is confusion, create movement when others are stuck, and help people contribute their best work. They also notice people who stay quiet during meetings and invite them to speak their mind, and recognize the good work of their colleagues.

Start With the Problem, Then Bring People Along

You don’t need to announce that you’re taking charge. Announcing, “I’m in charge now,” is unlikely to bring along your colleagues or to foster their collaboration.

Instead, focus on a problem the group needs to solve. Ask questions, listen to different perspectives, and propose a useful next step. People are more likely to follow when your contribution makes their work easier and helps the team succeed.

You could say:

“I noticed we are answering the same customer question in three different ways. Would it help if I created a first draft of a shared response for everyone to review?”

This approach demonstrates initiative while respecting the expertise and authority of others.

Four Ways to Lead From your Current Role

1. Create clarity.
Summarize what has been decided, identify what remains unresolved, and confirm who owns the next step. Clarity is one of the most valuable services you can offer a team.

2. Make other people successful.
Share information, give credit, introduce colleagues who could help one another, and create opportunities for quieter voices to be heard. Shining a light on people who rarely get noticed underscores your leadership too.

3. Communicate your thinking.
Explain how you reached a recommendation and what risks you considered. This allows others to evaluate your judgment and begin trusting you with more complex decisions.

4. Make sure informal leadership leads somewhere.
There is a risk in taking on management-level responsibilities indefinitely without the authority, compensation, or recognition that should accompany them. Document your impact and discuss your career goals with your manager. Ask what specific evidence the organization needs to see before considering you for a formal leadership role.

A title gives you formal authority. Your everyday behavior determines whether people trust your leadership. Start creating that evidence now, so that when an opportunity opens, others can already picture you in the role.
